Hi all, This afternoon I ran over to Cave Run Lake with hopes of waterfowl. The lake is almost entirely frozen in some areas, and about 50/50 in others. Biggest areas of open water are at the base of the dam, and around the "winter pool island" off Zilpo Beach/Twin Knobs. With all this cold weather lately, the next nearest open water might be the Ohio River. 19 Greater White-fronted Geese - near the shore opposite of the dam in a particularly inaccessible spot. Hard to view from the dam. 1 Snow Goose - close to the dam 2300 Canada Geese 54 Gadwall 3 American Wigeon 26 American Black Duck 96 Mallard 8 Green-winged Teal 124 Canvasback - two huge flocks near "winter pool island" and the Twin Knobs swimming beach 2 Redhead 3 Greater Scaup 27 Lesser Scaup 3 Bufflehead 13 Common Goldeneye 33 Hooded Merganser 1 Common Merganser Other birds of interest: 17 Pied-billed Grebe 2 Horned Grebe 30 American Coot 2 Bald Eagle 15 Herring Gull 711 Ring-billed Gull Today was probably the best midwinter waterfowl day I've had at this lake... kind of amazing considering 10 days ago I could hardly find a Mallard around here. Photos of the GWFG will be up on the KOS flickr. I forgot my camera so I had to digiscope... Good birding, Brian Wulker Morehead Ky
