As expected, the "type" of the Red Crossbills I had in Ohio County 31 December
are "2" or the ones that are most typically associated with Ponderosa Pines on
the breeding grounds.
This is the same type that was reported in Barren and Marshall counties (and
probably Ballard County) during the 2012-2013 invasion. These are mostly found
in association with introduced Loblolly pines here in our region. The
Loblollies have a large cone similar to the Ponderosa.
