About 600 pm this evening, I was surprised to hear the calls of Sandhill Cranes going over our farm in Jefferson County. The wind had been howling for a few hours from the northwest since the skies clouded over mid-afternoon. The flock of 60 birds was not making very good time as they bucked the wind attempting to head due north. Why those crazy things feel the need to migrate so early in the year is beyond me.
