James Wheat and I birded Barren River Lake today. I tried *three* times to get
a BIRDKY post out from my phone re: a juv. Red-throated Loon that we found out
from the Bailey's Point boat ramp mid-day, but no luck. The bird was diving
among or near about 40 Common Loons.
As expected given the VERY pleasant weather (62 degrees!), there weren't many
ducks on the lake, but we did have a single imm./female Surf Scoter west of
Bailey's Point campground, a few Ruddy Ducks and Red-breasted Mergansers, and
scattered Common Loons and Horned Grebes elsewhere.
We also saw American White Pelicans twice; 2 at the State Park beach and 9 on
the north side of The Narrows entrance road (Skaggs Creek embayment).
Gulls were the most noticeable feature on the lake today; would not doubt if we
scanned 1000 Bonaparte's (certainly 500-600) which far outnumbered Ringers
except on The Narrows marina roof (400-500). Also saw a few Herrings and one
bird that was likely a first-year Franklin's but that we did not see well.
Heard but did not see cranes.
