Robert Dever and I birded the Peabody WMA in Ohio and
Muhlenberg Counties on 8 August 2005. Highlights of
the trip included a surprising 20 juvenile Little Blue
Herons with 19 scattered at ponds along Wysox Road in
Ohio County. A single was observed at the TVA Lake
near Paradise.

Two Snowy Egrets were also observed, one along Wysox
Road and one at the Paradise ash basin.

Great Egrets scattered at ponds in both counties.

The shorebird wetland on the Homestead Unit was down
to a few puddles with one juv Least and a pair of
Solitary Sandpipers present. Three Least were
observed at the Paradise ash basin including a juv.

Good numbers of Henslow's Sparrows were still in song
and one Bell's Vireo was heard singing.

A trip to the Ballard County WMA on 11 August yielded
the following highlights at Mitchell Lake:

WHITE IBIS

Juvenile discovered and previously reported by Nicole
Ranalli. This is a different bird than was present at
Lake 9 in Fulton County last week. The Mitchell Lake
bird has a brighter bill lacking dark patches that
were present on the bill of the Lake 9 bird, and a
white patch on the left shoulder which the Lake 9 bird
lacked. It was again present at the north end of the
lake viewed from the banding area as reported by
Nicole.

Gr. Egret 100+ Scattered
Snowy Egret 20+
Little Blue Heron 20+
Yellow-crowned Night Heron 2 juvs
Mississippi Kite 6-8 scattered
Bald Eagle a juv at Mitchell Lake

Killdeer 175+
Lesser Yellowlegs 4 incl a juv
Solitary Sp 7
Spotted Sp 1
Semipalmated Sp 6 incl 2 juvs
Least 3 incl a juv
Pectoral Sp 210
Stilt Sp 4 juvs
Forster's Tern 2 flying downstream over the river
Least Tern 15-20 at Mitchell Lake

It appears to me that the level of the water at
Mitchell Lake has risen virtually eliminating
shorebird habitat. Most of the shorebirds were wading
chest-deep in the water to feed and many of the Pecs
had departed by early afternoon.
