I am always curious about the names of things and their etymology, like *Buteo
lagopus* (rough-legged hawk). *Buteo* is buzzard (hawk for us Americans),
plus *lago* for hare or rabbit and *-pus*, which means relating to feet (as
in octopus, eight feet, or platypus, flat feet). So *Buteo lagopus* is the
buzzard with feet like a rabbit, or "rough-footed like a hare" according to
the *Helm Dictionary of Scientific Bird Names*. And yes, my non-birding
friends think it's weird that I read stuff like that for fun. :-)

male. They don't have the classic huge black belly band, but are actually
darkest on the breast. Look at figures in field guides. Bird's plumage

Showing some winter site fidelity, it is not inconceivable that this is
one of the birds that showed up in the same area in January 2018. An adult
