Mary and I went to the Falls a couple of hours before sunset (when the light is lousy), but managed to add a surf scoter to Matt's list below. The surf scoter was above the Falls (seen from the Indiana side). Also saw one of the imm. black scoters. Did not find the Am. white pelican. Mary had a flock of 100-150 sandhill cranes in e. Jefferson County mid-morning today. At about 10:30 there was a white pelican at the basin above the Falls. About 5 rafts of ducks between the water tower and the Falls include about 50 horned grebes, 2 common loons, 30 bufflehead and smaller #'s of ruddy ducks, redheads, scaup and pied-billed grebes. In addition Jane Bell heard then saw about 45 sandhill cranes flying over at Towhead Island. Brainard may have misinterpreted my call to him reporting MANY birds as I was excited to see the first real movement of ducks into the area that I've seen this Fall. He was right that it was a very good day to be out looking on the river. Matt Stickel Louisville
