I just wanted to say that David is correct. I am new to birding but the variety
has been astounding to me. The West Buchel Police we’re driving around the
basin in a golf cart last night. Super nice and said I was fine, they just
didn’t recommend me staying much longer. The officer went on to say that they
were some strange characters that hang around there at night. They waited
around until I exited the basin. Told me to be safe and went on their merry
way. It was about 6:30 pm. They actually talked birds for a few minutes and
seemed interested in the different species present.

I work near there, and usually have about 45-1 hr. to check it, but I never
know when I'll get out, or how much time I'll have.

In response to the question about South Beargrass Creek Retention Basin, it's a
little bit of an awkward spot, but it is best to park
here<https://goo.gl/maps/ppiUuvUfd7EpHBKk9>. To get in you walk past a sign
that says not to enter, but the path around the basin is well worn by people in
the apartment complex behind the basin where there is no sign advising people
not to enter the area. It might seem weird, but I've never been bothered or
questioned for being there.
I know that this area is a little strange for a birding hotspot, but it has
good habitat and I certainly recommend birders in the area to visit it
periodically because it does hold some good birds. This morning in particular
I had an American Bittern, both night-heron species, a Prairie Warbler, and
numerous other migrants (43 species all
together!<https://ebird.org/checklist/S107608260>).
If you can see past all of the shopping carts and trash in the area, you may
just find some great birds!

For the Louisville birders with access, I wanted to see if anyone was going to
Melco today or tomorrow. Please let me know if you are and are willing to let
me tag along.
For the South Beargrass Creek Retention Basin, is there a recommended way to
enter/view this area?
