Thanks everyone!
A couple points of irony here:
1) They call the winner "The Birder of the Year," yet these days I'm probably
doing less birding than 80% of the folks on this listserv. Shameful. It was an
essay contest, that's all. Many of you are much better birders than I.
2) My essay is about the tension of birding with family in tow, then the prize
is a birding trip (one in which it would be exceedingly hard to bring the
family along). I'm really not complaining. Just ironic.
3) Again, it was an essay contest. Then they print my essay with 4 (!) typos in
it (which weren't in the original).
4) Last night, my mother forwarded the essay to my high school English teacher
(see #3). Thanks, Mom.

Last night when I opened my new issue of Bird Watcher's Digest I noticed
that Mark Tower had won their essay contest, with his work published in
the magazine. Mark is also going to Costa Rica, and receiving who knows
what other goodies, courtesy Swarovski Optik.
Way to go, Mark! BTW, will you be taking the family to Costa Rica?
