Logan Co. home. Now that the trees have leafed out, the dead ash tree
“skeletons” are conspicuous, in nearly every patch of trees…tens of
thousands of them in view along the interstates, in nearly every mile of
the trip. They were EVERYWHERE!
I mourn for the loss of ash trees, but can’t help but think that we’ll
see more woodpeckers, at least for a while…?

We had Downys that nested in a green ash tree beside our property this
spring. They have been feeding their juveniles the last few days on the
treat bars, nut and fruit seed cakes, and suet feeders outside my wife's
reading/quilting room.

We, staff at the Falls of the Ohio, just found a Downy Woodpecker with
Juvenile field marking of red on the crown.
Would it be possible to have a juv. downy this early?? It was alone and
foraging independently of any adult birds.
It just seems early to me.... maybe not ????
