Lexington birders spent a blissful day in Indiana today. On a trip scheduled two months ago to leave Lexington at seven a.m. to reach Muscatatuck around 9:30, we were somewhat dismayed that we had missed the Whooping Crane lift off by about 30 minutes. Recovering quickly, we took directions to Ewing and an area known as the Bottoms. There amongst the hundreds of Sandhill Cranes we saw three Whoopers, two juveniles and one adult. We hardly took our eyes away to see the Bald Eagle, the Harrier and all of the Horned Larks. Back at the Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge we enjoyed the blind with the regulars and several Fox sparrows and a Purple Finch. The ducks were not great in number but the variety was very nice: Gadwall, American Widgeon, Wood Duck, Green Winged Teal, Ring-necked Duck, Scaup (?), Coots and Mallards. This is one of our favorite places to bird.
