Joyce and CeCi,
You are absolutely right! I appreciate everyone's comments and conservation
dedication. The models I have seen say 9-12 billion people will be our Earth's
limit no matter how good technology, and how we try to raise carrying capacity.
In addition, there are those outside this and other similar list/groups, i.e.,
the other nearly 8 billion people who think Earth is entirely sustainable and
can withstand infinity of build and grow. Even common avian species, such as
robins and grackles are in decline. I am up to about 80 roadkilled robins this
year alone. I have always advocated educating the young. Every human, no
matter what they want to do in life, needs to be forced to take an ecology
course.
Unfortunately, us humans have left a mess for our grandchildren, those to
inherit an extremely messed up World.
Best to all,
Ron

The sad part (one of them, anyway) is that we have the technology to avoid or
mitigate our damage, but we don’t make it a priority. The stupid thing is that
we need these resources that we are destroying!

In Ohio, we have been doing a study on the decline of kestrels and it appears

building 100s of glass buildings daily across the US which kill more and more
birds and without any regulations. We do nothing about artificial lighting,
little to no regulations on pest control companies and tree companies. A tree

Folks, we are going down the wrong paths on the environment. Ice melting,
polar bears dying, monarchs are bees are disappearing, global climate change,
the "writing is on the wall" and we are not taking these seriously enough or
with enough urgency. We don't even properly regulate and manage what we do
have in national parks, forests, etc. Just look at what the dumb people do in
Yellowstone, how many get too close to Elk, Grizzlies, and Bison.
Just imagine if every day when we get up and turn on NPR, we would hear about
an environmental issue and what is being done about it instead of politics. I
urge folks that less buggy vehicle windshields should be a warning sign to us
all!
Sorry for negativity and rant! I am not optimistic. I have studied the
Golden-winged Warbler long enough, technically longer than anyone for the same
populations, and know there is little hope.

I have long been convinced that the increase in Cooper's Hawks (in at least our
region) over the course of the past 30-40 years could be a significant factor
in the decline of American Kestrels. Fledgling kestrels are very vulnerable and
I have seen Coops take passes at family groups several times on my farm.
On a related note, it appears that my local pair has only raised *one* young to
fledge this year. I was curious why I hadn't seen a lot of feeding activity in
the box the past few weeks, but now there is a single young bird being defended
by the adults. Not sure if this could have anything to do with the cold month
of April or what. This has happened a few times in the past.
