I have long been convinced that the increase in Cooper's Hawks (in at least our
region) over the course of the past 30-40 years could be a significant factor
in the decline of American Kestrels. Fledgling kestrels are very vulnerable and
I have seen Coops take passes at family groups several times on my farm.
On a related note, it appears that my local pair has only raised *one* young to
fledge this year. I was curious why I hadn't seen a lot of feeding activity in
the box the past few weeks, but now there is a single young bird being defended
by the adults. Not sure if this could have anything to do with the cold month
of April or what. This has happened a few times in the past.
