I did not mention this the other day, as I am not certain that my messages
are seen, but sure hope so. Anyway I was surprised to see not one but 2
Eastern Meadowlarks along Covered Bridge Road last week. I heard their
voice first and stopped and saw them each on fence posts, but got no photos,
as
traffic was headed my way. Thanks to all that make this group such fun to
learn from.

The first month is already in the books! Just a few days ago some of us
were lamenting the fact that it had been a relatively routine January for
birds, but then things began to pick up.

Below are a few observations and highlights ...

** I think I am definitely running into more birders out in the county
during January than I ever have before (which was one of the goals ... :o)

** 55 species were found in the county on January 1st.

** By month's end, participants had reported a total of 107 species.

** Kudos to Rob Lane (yeah, so what if he's currently one of the
non-employed ... :o) for reaching **100** species for the month!

** Another 20 participants have logged at least 40 species into eBird for
their lists.

** The "rarest" bird of the month was actually found by Jane and Pat Bell
before 2014 ended, but appears to be wintering and was seen on the
Anchorage Trail (and *beautifully* photographed, I might add -- see KOS Flickr
page) by Pam Spaulding on January 5th; it is a WHITE-EYED VIREO.

** Certainly not far behind are the gulls that have recently appeared on
the Ohio River including Iceland, Glaucous, Great Black-backed, and Lesser
Black-backed, as well as the single Snow and Cackling Geese.

** I was trying to find a few most likely species that *weren't* reported
during the month and came up with Cedar Waxwing (that's kind of amazing,
aye?), American Wigeon, and Red-breasted Nuthatch (but we sort of knew that).
