We'll be doing our June bluebird nest box monitoring work soon at Land Between
the Lakes National Recreation Area (171 nest boxes) and Lake Barkley State
Resort Park (60 nest boxes), and after a relatively mild winter (at least free
of late winter ice/snow storms), 2016 appears to be a rebound year for
bluebirds in our area. Nest box occupancy (eggs or babies) was much higher in
March-April-May than the previous two years. And, another positive is the fact
that the empty nest boxes have provided nesting opportunities for other
cavity-nesters (tufted titmice, Carolina chickadees, prothonotary warblers,
Carolina wrens, and tree swallows)---last year, the total number of "other"
fledglings (135) was the highest in 26 years. A similar effect occurred during
the 2014 season. In nature, it seems when one door closes, another opens.
