Hello Everyone: As some of you know, I have a real interest in American woodcock, especially those breeding here in Kentucky. Woodcock are a species that we unfortunately don't know much about in Kentucky. Most of our knowledge is based on anecdotal evidence from birders and Singing Ground Surveys conducted by our department. I am hoping to really change that in the future. Woodcock should begin to display (if they haven't already) in Kentucky very soon. I have undertaken a research project to identify woodcock display areas (especially those with high densities of birds) based on the landscape characteristics of those sites. To do this, I need as many locations of displaying woodcock as possible. I have a request for any of you who happen to be out and encounter displaying woodcock. I would really appreciate knowing the date/time, location, and number of displaying woodcock you might encounter. If you could record the location as specifically as possible (GPS coordinates would be wonderful), it would be a huge help with this research. This data will eventually be used to update the way we conduct surveys and will hopefully improve our knowledge of AMWO in Kentucky.
