Good habitat in any ecosystem provides food, cover, water and space. A whole
suite of birds utilize that “scrubby” habitat because insects and other
invertebrates are present, they in turn feed the raptors. Same for grasslands.
Intact habitat is key; with minimal disturbance by us humans with all our
clearing and paving and diverting.

Just a quick observation that might have some bearing on some folks’
complaints that they can’t seem to attract some particular bird species. I
stepped out into our back yard for a few minutes this morning long before
predawn. Looking over our yard and our pasture fields, lightning bugs were
everywhere. Looking over the wheat field across the road - zero lightning
bugs. Other critters aren’t so simple to compare, but I think the same sort
of difference is likely across the spectrum of living things. Grain fields
are near biological deserts and our countryside keeps getting closer and
closer to that stated aspiration of Archer-Daniels Midland - “Imagine the
whole landscape was one vast farm field.†I don’t want to imagine that
and sincerely hope it never happens.
