While we ate our dinner, last evening, we watched a hummingbird flitting back
and forth, apparently snatching gnats from the air, near one of our feeders.
It is doing it again, right now, and is fascinating to watch! We had seen video
of this, possibly on PBS‘s Nature, but had never actually observed it.
Also, last weekend, as I sat under the paper birch trees in the front yard, I
could hear several hummingbirds humming quietly from among the branches, above.
It was almost constant, and for an extended time. I was puzzled by it, but I
am wondering, now, if they were feeding on the aphids that plague those trees
at this time of year? It seems an aphid might be a bite sized meal for
hummingbird. Has anyone else observed his behavior?
