I've been seeing a lot on their journey too and I am struck with a similar
curiosity and wonder about them. I planted some native Asclepius tuberosa
(butterfly weed) this year and have the privilege of watching many refuel
in my yard before continuing. In fact, there is one on it now. :-)

Over the past week, Monarchs have been migrating by in small numbers
throughout the day. Everywhere I have been I've seen them plodding along on
an unerring southward heading. This week's warm, south and southwest winds
have had them migrating just a few feet above the ground, making them even
more apparent as they attempt to limit resistance to their journey. In the
absence of a good period of north tail wind, I've wondered how much more
difficult is their task.
Most of my observations have been from a tractor seat as I go round and
round, mowing, raking, and finally baling hay in one of our bigger fields.
But each time one has passed by I have been overcome with a feeling that
what I am doing is of so much less significance than what each one has
embarked upon. It is odd to realize that as they soldier past we are seeing
them for only a few seconds of such a long journey. I wonder "how long will
it take that one to make it to the trees on the horizon . . . where will
it in an hour, in a week, in a month?"
But wherever they all end up, I'll probably still be sitting in the drive
thru at Wendy's (where I saw two float by a couple of days ago), in the
house watching TV (from where I saw one yesterday), or going round and
round in the fields on the farm . . .
