Brian Wulker and I ran down to Fulton County to search for shorebirds Fri-Sat.
Weather was clear and cool with northish winds Fri afternoon and clear with
winds switching to south yesterday. We tallied 13 species with following
highlights:
Blk-bellied Plover -- 3 early birds west of Long Point Unit
Am Golden-Ploveer -- dozens at a few places, mostly Fri afternoon
Yellowlegs -- MANY ... dozens of Greaters; hundreds of Lessers; Brian's eBird
tallies for Fri and Sat set new state one-day high counts according to my
records. I think he said 1300+ Friday and 1400+ yesterday; they were obviously
everywhere, but particularly at Long Point Unit and in the Upper Hickman
Bottoms, where floodwaters are on the rise and all of the shorelines and pools
that are forming were filled with them and Pecs.
Pectoral -- hundreds with large flocks at several lcoales
Dunlin & Least -- a few at Long Point Unit
Stilt Sandpiper -- 1 at Long Point Unit pool south of the observation tower
B-n Stilt -- 4 at same location yesterday morning
L-b Dowitcher -- found a few places, but most at Long Point pool south of
observation tower with 60+ on Friday evening and 44 yesterday.
Other highlights included some Brewer's Blackbirds feeding in a freshly tilled
field along KY 2134 sw. of Long Point. Waterfowl have largely left, although
some gatherings of dabblers remain mostly around Long Point. Continued enjoying
the remarkable change in status of Orange-crowned Warbler in Kentucky with one
singing (and seen) at Long Point yesterday.
The Upper Hickman Bottoms is going to be really good for shorebirds late next
week when the brief flood passes.
On return yesterday we stopped by the dams and found little of interest,
although Common Loons are scattered about and Brian found one Horned Grebe. We
had poor conditions for scanning thru the Bonaparte's Gulls that are
flycatching off the east bays of Lake Barkley just south of the dam, but
someone should look thru them for a Little Gull.
