Thanks everyone for the responses! It turns out that GHOW do indeed squawk and
they don’t have to be juveniles to do it. Just because they haven’t bothered
to do it where I could hear doesn’t mean it’s not so:-).

I know this sounds bizarre, but a local friend called Debby, at 6 AM this
morning, to say that there were owls squawking in the trees near her house.
She said she could see a GHOW nearby…but GHOW don’t squawk! Anyway, this
woman later sent a video recording from her phone. Debby forwarded it to me,
and I was astounded to hear the distinctive call of at least two fledgling
GHOW, squawking loudly, apparently from the depths of a bradford pear tree.
The visual quality of the video was really poor, but you could see a nervous
adult lurking in a tree nearby. The audio was perfect, though and they sound
like the fuzzy fledglings that we see in March.
I have never heard of late summer nesting for GHOW…have I just been missing
this?
BTW, we counted Common Nighthawks, here, for the third evening in a row.
