Both Brainard and I thought the other was going to address this, but it
looks like it will be me.
The squawk call often labelled as 'fledgling' or 'begging' is given year
round. Additionally, the females give a similar squawk, often for long
periods of time particularly in the fall ('single squawk Delilah' in the
following link). This does 'not' indicate recent fledgling of birds, even
if they failed a first attempt back in January.
In fact, the combo of Great Horned Owl squawks are the most frequent
non-human sounds we hear during fall owl banding.

A few years ago I did transport to RROKI a barn owl that was still in down
in late September from western KY so obviously it was a late hatch. I know
they are later hatch than GHOWs and sometimes have a second hatch. Maybe it
was a second hatch or as someone stated species beside GHOW???

You could have possibly been missing it.
Lee and I saw what seemed to be a Courting Barred Owl Pair late in the
Season last Spring at the main entrance of Cherokee Park.
It was rather odd or so it seemed to Lee and I.
I do not remember seeing them anymore after that first sighting.
