As Alison and I approached Middle Pond on our afternoon front field circle
today, I saw a Wood Duck pair near Tire Island. A pair of Mallards were on the
far side. As we got nearer, the Wood Ducks swam across the pond to join the
Mallards. The Mallards took off as we got nearer, but I didn’t see the Wood
Ducks take off. I decided to walk along the dike to see if they had hidden in
one of several small coves along the dike. Before getting that far, a Canada
Goose that had been hunkered down on the dike rose up just a few feet from me
and took off. I walked almost to the end of the dike. Moments after I gave up
and turned around, the Wood Ducks flew up from a point I had just been within 6
feet of. A mixed swallow flock appeared before we moved on, including Tree,
Barn & Rough-winged. We also encountered a waxwing flock before getting back to
the house.
Before our walk, in a phone conversation with my Madisonville sister, she
described a flock of small birds she had been seeing at her feeders. From her
description, I was able to direct her to the Sibley page that includes Pine
Siskins. she could see from the illustration that that was her bird.
