A pair of Kingbirds are feeding babies that are hidden in an oak tree, across
the road from the house. Last weekend, I watched them hurrying back and forth
to the nest tree, most often from the direction of the grown-over pond
depression. On Monday evening, I was standing near the pond depression, when I
noticed movement among the blackberry canes. I found it in the binoculars in
time to see a Kingbird snatch a blackberry, while on the wing, then land long
enough to swallow it. It then grabbed another and abruptly headed in the
direction of the nest tree.
Earlier this morning, I saw one carry a berry to the top of a nearby tree that
appeared be too big to swallow. I’ve read that Kingbirds eat berries on their
wintering grounds, but thought that it must be rare in the summer. I couldn’t
imagine a delicate and dainty flycatcher gobbling berries. I am forever amazed
at what goes on, if a person takes time to notice!
