I wasn’t sure, when I first saw an owl at the nest box entrance, whether it was
an adult of a young one. Yesterday, I saw 2 out of the box, both females. There
was a 3rd one at the box entrance when I first peeped in, but it withdrew
inside before I could note whether it was white or buff in front. Since it’s
relatively unlikely that the adults would be a same sex couple, I think both
two I photographed are fledglings. One other thing makes me think these are
fledglings. - While I was observing the one sitting on the horizontal beam, it
flapped its wings for 5 or 6 seconds, remaining in place. That seems more like
a juvenile activity than something an adult would do. In one of the pictures I
took yesterday, one owl cocked its head completely upside down while looking at
me.
