The BCBC meeting Monday evening, January 12, was a very busy and successful one. We had three new visitors to the club meeting and we were glad to welcome all three as visitors and later as new club members. They were Renae Matney of Mavisdale, and Travis and Kim Ratliff of Honaker. Secretary/ Treasurer Lynda Mayhorn gave a financial report for the year and collected dues for the 2009 year. Those, who were not at the meeting and would like to pay their dues by mail, can send a check for $5.00 single or $10.00 family made out to The Buchanan County Bird Club to Lynda Mayhorn 3343 Compton Mt Rd Pilgrims Knob, VA 24634 Club members Josh and Joel Meade then gave a very good Power Point program on the Great Backyard Bird Count which will take place in February. It was very informative and well presented. For those who want to learn more about the Great Backyard Bird Count the info can be found at http://www.birdsource.org/gbbc/ I then presented a short Power Point Program showing more photos of the still present, unexpected visitor, the Long-billed Curlew. I informed members that I had written an article for The Virginia Mountaineer, our local newspaper about the curlew, and that hopefully the article with photos would appear in this week's edition. I then proposed that the club present Ed Bailey, the land owner where the curlew is located, an honorary Birder of the Month Award, since in the past he has brought to the club's attention, not only the curlew but several other good finds like a Ross's Goose, and a Cattle Egret. Ed Talbott II then made the suggestion that we make Ed an honorary club member. The motion passed with a unanimous vote. I then talked a little about our first Christmas Bird Count and about its success and thanked those who had participated. We then discussed the upcoming Burkes Garden outing on January 31 and Jerry and Jane Thornhill gave us the details about the Russell County Bird Club outing on Saturday, January 17. I next brought it to everyone's attention that January was the month for club officer elections and opened the floor for nominations. Jane Thornhill made the motion that the present officers remain in their respective offices. After a second for the motion a vote was taken which passed with all members present agreeing. The club officers for 2009 are Roger Mayhorn - President Ed Talbott III - Vice President Lynda Mayhorn - Secretary/Treasurer Near the end of the meeting I showed club members a copy of a new book called Birdwatcher, The Life of Roger Tory Peterson. This was a book recently sent to me by the author, Elizabeth J. Rosenthal, so that a review of it could be placed in a future issue of our club newsletter. I am about halfway through the book and am finding it very interesting reading. At Mary Talbott's suggestion I asked the Buchanan County Library staff if a copy or copies could be purchased for the library. I received positive feedback concerning that. Of course it goes without saying that I warned all three new club members to watch out for Jerry Thornhill. They didn't say so verbally, but I got a definite impression that they would do so.
