VBS: Barbara Chambers 1929 - 2012
For the past eleven years, since we in the Buchanan County Bird Club started
our bluebird trails, I have been exchanging information with Barbara Chambers,
a very nice lady who was one of the founders of the Virginia Bluebird Society.
She would email me concerning the data we were collecting or she would thank me
for submitting an article to the newsletter "The Bird Box" . She was always
ready for a fast and friendly reply to any question related to bluebirds. She
often thanked me for the work our club was doing to help bluebirds. Sadly,
Barbara recently passed away. The Virginia Bluebird Society will not be the
same without her. Even though I never met her in person, I felt a kinship with
her where bluebirds were concerned. It is sad to know that she will not be
sending anymore bluebird emails our way.

                        Barbara Chambers
                        1929 - 2012
It is with great sadness that I report that
Barbara Chambers died on October 15th after a short illness. Barb was one of
the founders of the Virginia Bluebird Society in 1996, and has worn many hats
and worked tirelessly for VBS ever since. She was, at various times, a board
member, the newsletter editor, the new and refurbished grants coordinator,
nominations committee member, a county coordinator and the state county
coordinator. But this simple list does not do justice to her contributions.
For instance, she contributed articles and helped edit every single edition of
“The Bird Box.” She initiated the program of having county coordinators as a
voice for VBS across the state. She attended the board meetings and when
something needed to be done, she was there to volunteer.
When I play the mental game of thinking of
just one word to describe Barb, words like “powerhouse,” “tireless,” and
“advocate” come to mind. But the one word that has been used by so many people
when they have heard of her death is mentor. People across the state and even
the nation have told me that she was their bluebird mentor. She educated and
encouraged us in the conservation of bluebirds and other native cavity nesting
birds. Drawing on her career as a teacher, she had a way of motivating people
to do the right thing by our bluebirds.
In addition to VBS, Barb was involved with
the North American Bluebird Society, serving on the board of directors,
chairing the nominating committee and speakers bureau, co-chairing the nestbox
committee and answering the helpline. She also volunteered with the Northern
Virginia Bird Club, local and state parks, and the National Wildlife Refuge
system. Her conservation efforts have been recognized over the years with
various awards.
At the recent VBS board meeting, we
discussed ways to remember Barbara for her endless contributions. While the
details are still being fine tuned, the bluebird trail at Meadowlark Botanical
Gardens, which she started, will be renamed in her honor and a custom visual
representation of the life cycle of the bluebird will be created for display in
the visitor center and for use in educational programs. Meadowlark is a
showcase park located in Fairfax County and is part of the Northern Virginia
Regional Park Authority. In addition, a special nestbox has been created out
of American Chestnut in her memory by VBS board member Paul Davis. Barbara
will also be remembered with a VBS award in her name.
If you would like to make a donation in
memory of Barbara, please send a check payable to VBS, noting that it is for
Barbara Chambers memorials, to: Virginia Bluebird Society, 726 William Street,
Fredericksburg, VA 22401. Your donation will be gratefully acknowledged.
                        Yours,
