This large Cicada Killer was in our yard yesterday. It was heading directly
for this Tiger Swallowtail butterfly. It seemed to be chasing the
butterflies, but as soon as one took flight the Cicada Killer lost interest.
It was probably looking only for cicadas. These large wasps burrow into the
ground to nest, but not usually in colonies as other wasps do. The females
sting cicadas paralyzing them, then carry them back to their nest where they
lay their eggs on them. The young wasps feed on the cicada. According to
the internet these large wasps do not attack humans. They don't sting people
unless they are "handled roughly". The males are very aggressive to other
insects, but do not have stingers.

It's interesting to see what you find in your own backyard.
