The Mesa Astronomy/Geology Society will meet Saturday April 19 from 7 to 9 PM. Location: 1444 N. Recker Road, Mesa, AZ in the clubhouse of the Alta Vista Apartments. Our featured speaker will be Dr. Ted Bowell, director and principal investigator for the LONEOS (Lowell Observatory Near-Earth Object Search) program based in Flagstaff at Lowell Observatory. LONEOS is a system designed to find Earth-crossing asteroids (ECAs) and comets (ECCs), collectively known as near-Earth objects (NEOs). These objects can occasionally collide with Earth sometimes with devastating consequences. Finding large NEOs is the first step in averting a collision. Dr. Bowell is internationally recognized as a leader in this research so it should be an interesting evening. The latter part of the meeting will be devoted to a SWAP meet for anyone wishing to buy, sell or trade any astronomical or related items. If you have anything you wish to sell, trade or perhaps buy please bring it with you for display. This will not be an auction! While membership or donations are encouraged, all interested parties are welcome to attend.
