Paul,

My understanding is dispersed camping is allowed in the Big Lake area
anywhere the roads are open. Some of the darkest skies I have ever seen have
been in the White Mountain area. It is about a 5 hour drive, so more than 1
or 2 nights is needed.

Hi Howard,

Thanks for the nice comments.

The 9200' site sounds neat. Do you have a specific site on FR 409? Some
place where campers don't build fires and such. Of course, that area may be
getting zorched by the Wallow Fire right now. I will definitely look into
it.

The lightning shot is absolutely spectacular. Definitely not something you
want to see on an observing run.

Thanks for the note.

Paul

Hi Paul,

Excellent writing! Very poetic. Very well done.

You mentioned wanting to go to higher elevations. I would recommend
Forest Road 409 above Big Lake. I've been there occasionally. It
is at the 9200 foot level. Best view of Jupiter I ever got was there.
Absolutely crystal clear... Need to avoid the monsoon of course...

This shot was taken while we were there during a monsoon storm:

That one scared me and I took the camera back into the motorhome
and quit for the night. :-) Plain old 50mm lens (Canon AE-1) and
film so you can tell that the bolt hit the ground within 1/8 of a mile...

This is a 1997 film shot from that location:
