Speaking of Easter Eggs, I havenât found any galaxies in the background of
this one. :-( Most of your images seem to have at least a couple. Some, a
bunch! But why none here? Is the distribution of galaxies uneven? Is this one
so bright that dim background galaxies donât get picked up? The gas in the
Loster Nebula obscures everything behind it?
There are no galaxies here because of the interstellar obscuration. It is
the dust doing the extinction, not the gas, which is quite transparent. Not
only is the field right on the galactic plane, but also superposed close to the
galactic center, which is obscured by something like 40 magnitudes in the
visible.
Detecting galaxies even deeper into the obscuration is simply not possible at
visual wavelengths.
