Over the past few nights, I've imaged M1 for what is now the umpteenth time.
(See photo here.) Just lately, though, I see a feature I've overlooked. There
seems to be a vortex/tornado looking feature that stands out, at least to me.
It emanates from the center and wraps around toward the 10 o'clock position,
as you look at the photo. (Actually, there are several.)
My question is, assuming you see it, has this been noted or observed in the
past?
Bill,
I have recently been working on a sequence that shows the growth of the
filaments through an image I took earlier this week. The earliest image I
could find was taken by George Ritchey, who used the 60-inch at Mount Wilson in
1910. This paper is an interesting read, as he discusses the state of the art
in astroimaging over a century ago.

Plate VII is an image of the Crab (north down, east right) that you can rotate,
and overlay with yours. What I learned by spending too much time trying to
register my mage with Ritchey's was that the filaments have nearly maintained
their shapes while they expanded outward.
