by, CMO Isaac Mahler, MD and Nurse Ka'Lia Ka'Lia leaned against the wall of the turbolift and sighed. "I need a margarita, stat!" "Make that a double." Mahler listened to the soft noise of the 'lift as they headed towards the Lounge. "So good to be out and about for a while." "No kidding. I was starting to think this day was never going to end." She smiled. "So, you pick up the first round, I'll grab the next." "Fine with me. That was one operation I thought I might not finish successfully." He thought for a moment. "Haven't had such a challenge since an away mission five years back on Sigma Delta II. It was the first time I lost someone ... not just a limb, mind you, I had to pronounce a patient dead and fill out the damned certificate. I was afraid we were headed in that direction today." "Don't take this the wrong way, but I'm still suprised we didn't lose him. after the third code I was sure it was a sign from the Goddess." she admitted. "Well, so long as we don't get any more alarms from Sickbay, I think he'll be on the mend soon," said Mahler as the turbolift stopped and the doors hissed open. "Our stop." "From your lips to her ears, dear doctor," she smiled, exiting the lift. Heading into the lounge, she was immediately struck by the sound of music and laughter. "ah, much better." "I'll say." They found a table and sat down. A waiter came up. "May I take your order? " "two double margaritas, extra salt please," Ka'Lia answered. She looked around at the gyrating bodies and suggested, "dance, Doctor? " "Why not." Mahler got up and led Ka'Lia onto the dance floor as the waiter disappeared. He put an arm around her waist and the other on her shoulder and they began moving in time to the music. Ka'Lia fought the urge to blush, surprised to find herself enjoying the feeling of the good doctor's hand on her waist. "You dance well," she said, enjoying the music. "Thank you ... and so do you." The music rose and swelled around them, carrying them away on a carpet of sound. They were lost, for a while, in a sea of harmony before the sounds died down. Ka'Lia found herself swaying, head upon his shoulder listening to his hearbeat as the music ended. Reluctantly, she stepped back at last. "come on, she said, leading the way back to the table. "Our drinks are melting." He followed her to the table. "To us," he said, lifting his glass. "We make a good team." He smiled, quite relaxed. "we really do," she agreed, raising her glass as well. "To us." She sipped, noting for the first time how truly amazing his eyes were. He sipped at his drink. He hadn't felt this good in a long time. He was enjoying life, and Ka'Lia made wonderful company. "So enough about medicine for now," he said. "What do you do in your off time? I've a mania for collecting butterflies and moths, if that's any interest to you. And music." He hoped something would interest her ... he didn't want to be a bore. "I love music," she answered, then admitted, blushing brightly, "I usually just stay home and read. Listen to music. Maybe bake. I love to bake." She sipped her drink before adding, "I'd love to see your butterflies. I don't think I've ever seen a real one." He smiled. "Oh I can show you a wide variety from dozens of worlds," he replied. "Reading is fun, too, providing you have stimulating subject matter. I love old classics - - 19th and 20th century novels and the like. I don't have a favorite author, just a lot of ones that I think are quite appealing. And I'd love to sample some of your food sometime." "if you want to come for dinner after drinks," she drew a breath, unable to beleive she was actually saying this, "I'll even make you breakfast in the morning." "Well now." He could hardly believe she was offering him that. "I think that sounds wonderful, although I wouldn't want to impose upon you." He could hardly believe she was offering him this. All too often in the past his hopes had been raised only to be dashed. He wanted the cycle to be broken somehow. Would she be the one? Was he really saying yes? "It wouldn't be imposing. Honestly," she assured him. "I'd really love it if you'd say yes." He nodded. "Yes it is. And thank you, Ka'Lia. I'm very honored." She smiled over her margarita. "So what would you like for dinner? And...breakfast? " "Good food is good food," he replied. "I'd rather let you choose." "Alright, then. I'll suprise you." She smiled wickedly over the rim of her drink. "Good. I love surprises ... unless they're ones from Sickbay." He drained the rest of his glass and set it down. She finished hers quickly. "I promise not to injure you." she answered with a wink. Holding out her hand, she stood and smiled. "Shall we, then? " He rose and took her hand. "Let's." He followed her out of the Lounge, wondering what would come next.
