Background:
They say some people are born under a bad sign. If it's true at all, it's
probably true for Matthew Fielding. Born to Federation cultural researcher
Lyman Fielding and artist Holshue, Matthew arrived in the middle of the
worst famine to hit his home planet in several centuries, a famine which had
already taken the life of his father.

His mother remarried, this time to a fellow Ekosian, and had twin girls when
Matthew was three. In an expression of childish temper, he ran away from
home at the age of five, and was taken in by Kantroth, a native of Zeon,
Ekos' sister planet, who had immigrated to Ekos long before. Matthew was so
happy in the older man's home that it was soon arranged for him to live
there permanently.

At the age of 13, while he was an exchange student on Mizar Five, Matthew
was kidnapped and held for ransom. He was held for an extended period in a
small bathysphere, several hundred feet below the surface of the ocean. He
was eventually rescued, physically unharmed, but with emotional scars that
persist to this day -- the principal one being a phobia of the ocean, and of
being immersed in water.

He returned to Ekos angry, bitter and rebellious; in consequence he became
involved with a gang of adolescent thieves, turning his knack for hacking
small electronic devices toward high-stakes burglary. The other members of
the gang would pull the actual heists, using gadgets Matthew had designed
and built. On the night of their biggest heist yet, the other members of
the gang -- and their loot -- disappeared. To this day Matthew doesn't know
if they went to ground, got caught by a competitor, or what.

He took the disappearance of his partners in crime as a sign it was time to
go straight -- and get off-planet -- and so he applied to Starfleet
Academy. Initially he was given training in support and hospitality
services (as this was the only thing he appeared to be qualified for; he had
deliberately done poorly on his entrance exam for the sake of anonymity).
After a time, allowing his true talents to come to the fore, he was
reassigned to technical and engineering studies, specializing in transporter
technology.

While on leave on Tarsus IV, between receiving his commission and first ship
assignment, Matthew was attacked by a hostile forest creature, barely
surviving the encounter. While he appears to have completely healed from
this, his genetic profile still shows a few anomalies which suggest some of
the creature's genetic material remains. It is assumed that his own body
will rid itself of the alien genetic material over the course of time.

Personality:
Left to himself, Matthew Fielding is quiet and introverted; he is a bit of a
dreamer and seems to almost enjoy cultivating an air of mystery about
himself. If irritated or overwrought, he may react with a dangerously
sharp-tongued flash of temper. In most pressure situations, however, he
reacts with a cool demeanor, and there is no question of his courage. He is
generous with money to the point of being a spendthrift; in this as well as
other regards he seems to have little concern with what the future will
bring.
