Actually, there is a way to extract all embedded pictures from a Word
file. A full answer could be the subject of a short article but I'll
give a brief description here.
First, get the FileFormatConverters file from Microsoft that allows
older versions of Word to save in Word 2007 format, specifically the
.docx format, and install it.
Save the target file as a .docx and close it.
Rename the file extension as .zip (those familiar with OOo Writer 2 file
format will see where I'm going).
Extract all files to a convenient location. Among everything else is a
folder labelled "media" that contains the embedded graphics files where
you can grab them and use them. This has got me out of those awkward
situations where the only available pictures are embedded in an old Word
document.
