Odd points:

What do you know about .wmf.

It's a vector format, not a raster one, and so quite unsuitable for a screenshot.

Once a picture is embedded is there ANY way of seeing what file type it is?

Only this indirect and, sadly, not 100% accurate method: save the Word file as HTML. Then by studying the HTML and seeing which image gets referenced from where, you can roughly figure out what was what. But note that Word often saves two versions of each image: original format and a smaller jpeg, perhaps used internally for quick rendering. If anyone can shed further light on all this, please do so. Something to play with in someone's spare time.

Strange thing is, I get better resolution when SnagIt is set to save to .png than when it is set to save to .jpg

No, that's not strange at all, since png is lossless and jpg is lossy.

This whole matter was discussed in austechwriter in the latter half of June 2005. The postings are available on the austechwriter archive on Freelists. It is important to understand the distinctions raster/vector and lossless/lossy but it's difficult to go into all that here, this being a discussion list. Further, Wikipedia isn't all that good on the raster/vector dichotomy (something for my to-do list), although there's stuff on the subject here and there on the web.

For those who are newish to austechwriter, it's worth knowing that you can not only look at the archive but you can do keyword searches in it, at //www.freelists.org/archives/austechwriter/
