Just wondering if there are any tech writers in unions out there?

As soon as Howard announced WorkChoices I joined APESMA (Association of Professional Engineers Scientists and Managers, Australia).  It was formed by the merging of previous, separate associations/unions, of which one was an IT group.  It tends to be a bit engineery but, on the other hand, it is well-heeled and not afraid of pursuing employers in the courts if need be.  If you want to discuss the Tech. Comms profession, you already have ASTC.  You can also use the Members Equity Bank and the very well-rated Australian Super fund, an industry-based fund formed out of the merger of may smaller industry funds in the past.

If you want industrial strength legal advice and negotiating assistance, APESMA or MEAA is the way to go.  I think APESMA might be a little more attuned to the realities of software development environments.

Hedley
