So Bill, what is the price of a human life?

I'm sorry you were 4 hrs late to work, together with a lot of other people.
I however feel more for the 3 people's families who now deal with the loss
of loved ones.

Anna

At the risk of being offensive to bleeding hearts and Melbournites who were=
subjected to the horrific pictures of a train x car smash at a level cross=
ing at 6:00 in the morning with working signals and boom gates that killed =
three mature people who lived in the neighbourhood of the crossing:=20

What kind of human neural activity would you anticipate given the circumsta=
nces

1. car stopped on the train tracks used by high speed country trains as a c=
onsequence of traffic backed up from a minor accident down the road.

2. trapped by lowering boom gates signified by flashing lights and clanging=
 bells.

3. you have around 30 seconds to make a choice:

   a. bail out of the car and run like hell, or

   b. sit and wait, hoping it isn't true.

The resulting decision by the occupants of the car, cost me (and who knows =
how many other thousand train commuters in Melbourne's outer northwest) 3 3=
/4 hours to get to work, at who knows what economic cost to the Victorian e=
conomy (and profit to bus companies that had spare busses).

Sometimes accidents like this are due to documentation problems that we as =
techwriters can do something about. This one (pending results of investigat=
ions) seems to be due to human brainlessness. Hopefully, the object lesson =
will cause other people to turn their brains on.

Bill
