Pay rates have always been a 'hobby' of mine Mary. Basically, contract rates should be based on a 220 day basic year (this removed weekends, holidays and sick days and makes an allowance for long service). So, to use your example, $16.00 per hour x 8 hours per day (some companies only work 7.5 hours a day) equates to an annual salary equivalent to $28,160. You then need to add in the 'time out of work' factor which is around 25% (this fluctuates wildly depending on your client list, your skills, your background and the timing of your end of contracts) so, $28,160 x 75% = $21,120. Also keep in mind there should be a penalty allowance for the lack of career path, security etc. so you should probably chop off another 5% or more giving a more realistic 'full-time' value of $20,064 for a $16 per hour contract rate. You can add to this the value of your medical/dental plans but obviously this would differ between employees. There is usually no value in having medical/dental plans at 22 years of age but there would be a very real value to those about to have children or to 50+ year olds. So what are we all worth? $20,000 per annum + plan value? According to some, we clearly are..... Oops, sorry Mary... my soapbox slipped out again. :) Cheers.
