I don't think you will need master docs for this unless you are working on a
vintage computer.

That's 280 pages at most. The largest of my recent Word books is 252 pages,
the entire thing is built with tables, with vast numbers of images. The total
size is 14 mb, and it is not even remotely challenging the capacity of my
computer to handle it. I have edited documents over 20mb and up to 400 pages
without a hitch.

I would recommend that you just start building it as a single file and only
worry about master documents if you start to have trouble. You will have far
fewer issues with maintenance if it is a single file.

There is some kind of automated feature to split a file up into sub documents
for a master document. I played with it a bit, but decided I couldn't be
bothered given I have never yet reached the limit of Word to handle the
documents I work with. If you are really serious you will find the
documentation for 2003 here. I couldn't find anything for 2007 and 2010.

Perhaps Warren can help here - do these instructions apply equally to 2003,
2007 and 2010?

Christine

I'll have about seven 'sections' of between 20 and 40 pages (very roughly). Not
huge, but big enough to warrant using master doc, I think. Do you?

I am interested to know this too. Sonja - what page count/file size are you
anticipating for your manual?

Hi all,

Re: 'Has anyone done a substantial manual as a master doc in Word 2007 and
lived to tell the tale?'

I am very, *very* interested to hear success (or otherwise) stories as well.
I'm going to try using master doc in a few weeks and would love to know what
I'm in for!

Sonja

What you say is generally true but master docs might be an exception. An
article in a reasonably reliable newsletter claims that MS 'rewrote the whole
codebase' for Word 2007. I posted the following to a few TW lists last year but
haven't heard that anyone has tried it out:

'According to this article, MS fixed the master document feature in Word 2007
and it now works. It's the first I've heard of it.

http://news.office-watch.com/t/n.aspx?articleid=1396&zoneid=12

"Don't be afraid - Word's Master Documents is stable and worth using.

Eventually Microsoft listened and rewrote the whole codebase to make it work
safely. However memories of master document disasters still linger and
Office-Watch.com is often asked if the feature is now safe. The answer is
yes..."

Has anyone done a substantial manual as a master doc in Word 2007 and lived to
tell the tale?'
