I've also been meaning to write to you about this. Would you mind if we published it in the (NSW) Newsletter? I wish I'd remembered to ask this question earlier. We normally don't want two contributions from the same person. Are you the author of this list or was it one you got from somewhere else??? Thanks. -----Original Message----- From: Craig Hadden [mailto:CraigH@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Tuesday, 6 January 2004 11:33 AM To: 'austechwriter@xxxxxxxxxxxxx' Subject: atw: Converting Word files to FrameMaker Mick Washbrooke asked about converting Word files to FrameMaker (in message //www.freelists.org/archives/austechwriter/12-2003/msg00112.html). I found the following points useful, and hope they're of some help. Before the import: * Probably _by far_ the most productive thing you can do is to make the FrameMaker character and paragraph tags _identical to_ the Word style names, including case of letters. (If you want to use different FrameMaker tags in the long term: before the import, rename them in your FrameMaker template to match the Word style names and then rename them back afterwards. This can be a bit of a pain, but it's usually much quicker than re-applying styles to dozens of paragraphs after the import.) Using identical names between the two programs causes your text to map extremely well from Word to FrameMaker. * Delete the table of contents in Word. * Delete unused bookmarks in Word, to prevent FrameMaker creating redundant markers. (For example, delete hidden "_Toc" bookmarks. I sometimes had to un-tick and then re-tick the "Hidden bookmarks" checkbox in the Bookmarks dialog box before Word would list them.) * In an Office 97 environment, you can recover embedded graphics without loss of quality by copying-and-pasting them from Word to Microsoft Photo Editor and saving them from there. During the import, in FrameMaker: * When prompted, you can choose an option to automatically delete manual page breaks. I strongly recommend that you also choose the option to remove format overrides, but that decision depends on your particular circumstances. (Both options are off by default.) After the import, in FrameMaker: * Use the Find/Change dialog box (with Use Wildcards ticked) to remove any hard-coded step numbers. You can use expressions like "\P[1-9].\t" (without quotes) in the Find text box and nothing in the Change text box. * Import the graphics by reference. * To apply appropriate FrameMaker table formats, convert tables to tab-delimited text, then convert them back (both of which you can do using the Table menu). * Replace notes, tips etc with the appropriate tables formats.
