I totall agree Peter - always start at the beginning of you document, click on the first page, go into the header and then click Next [header] on the header ribbon or toolbar.

If you really want to guarantee that you have the headers and footers setup correctly for the life of the document - the best way is to temporarily add sufficient pages in each sections so that all of the headers and footers for each section will be visible when you check them.

Once you've checked them, delete the page breaks.

For example, I usually set up my documents with the following sections:

S1 - Cover (unique header and footer)

S2 - Important Notices (different header/footer to S1)

S3 - Table of Contents (same header/footer to S2)

S4 - Chapter 1 (different header/footer to S3)

S5 - Chapter 2 (same header/footer to S4)

s6 - Attachment A (different header to S5/ same footer to S5)

s7 - Back Page (different header/footer to S6)

S1 and S7 will be set to have just a header, but all the other sections will have a Different first page, and S1 will have no page number being the cover.

S2 and S3 will have roman numeral page numbers, and a unique heading style for the level 1 header (Heading: Preface).

S2-S6 will all be set to have Different First Page

To check my headers with a new template setup, I add a page break in S2-S6 so that I can see the First Page Header/Footer and the follow on Header/Footer.  Each of these sections will have two headers and two footers - but you won't see them until you add sufficient pages.

All Headers and Footers in S3-S6 will be set to Same as previous, and all First Page Headers and Footers will be set to Same as Previous - initially.

I will turn off Same as Previous for any Headers in S2, S4, S6 and S7.  And I will turn off Same as Previous for any Footers in S2 and S4.

The reason is that in my headers I have a StyleRef field to display the Level 1 heading.

As S2 and S3 have a Level 1 heading with a different style name (Heading: Preface) to S4 (Heading 1), and S6 (Attachment: Heading 1) I need to change the StyleReffields in these headers.  If I add more attachment chapters after S6 (before the back page), these can continue to be Same as previous.  I can also add additional chapter sections before S6 which will be Same as Previous to S4.

With the Footers it's just S2 and S4 I need to turn off the Same as Previous for all footers in those sections.  S2 has a different footer to S1 (Cover - has no page number), and S4 starts arabic page numbering, while S2 and S3 have roman numerals.

If you are setting up a document with Odd and Even pages as well as Different First Page - you need to have 3 pages in each section to see all the headers and footers.

Hope that helps - if not, let me know where you need clarification.

Any new sections will always adopt the Header/Footer settings of the previous section.  They will always be set to Same as Previous by default - but you change it by going into the header or footer and toggling it off as Neil described.

Just one note on this stuff.

I find I get all kinds of unexpected results if I try changing these settings in the middle of a document

without trailing right through the doc from top to toe to ensure all the heading and footer settings stay in their expected settings.

I guess there's a logic to it, and I guess somewhere once someone documented this, but I'm not a trusting soul in this area,

and sometimes I find it's prudent to track down through the document and then back up to see what's happened to all the

settings. And then I do it again.  Seems to be very easy to break things, particularly when you're dealing with the marvels of duplex printing.
