If you haven't already heard about it: This year's conference theme is "engaging your online reader". By now, we all know how to write for online reading: chunking and summarizing and lists, etc, but how do we persuade our readers to actually use our documentation? And how do we help them find what they are looking for? Come to the conference for some answers. That hot topic, single sourcing, is discussed in a session on content management systems, covering the subject in general and then in a little detail about one product in particular. Is content management the best way to handle single sourcing? A lot of people, especially in the USA, think so. If you know what "content management" means, you have the knowledge to embrace or reject it in your own workplace. (We'll be giving away a magazine devoted to the subject.) James Robertson will help to determine whether your intranet is a business positive, rather than an expense that withers through lack of commitment. Will what you learn from this presentation help you sell yourself into your next job: setting up an intranet? The Cinderella of online formats, PDF, is covered in two sessions. There's a lot more to PDF than meets the eye and our two presenters will tell us some surprising things about them. One of these presenters is Victoria Richardson who presented the fascinating "Thank God it's not a PDF" at last year's conference. We've included two sessions on topics more familiar to technical communicators: Shared language between technical and non technical people (can there be one?) and Writing documentation that markets your product. And we have some beaut prizes: a Tactics Web course and a copy of Acrobat Professional. We'd love to see at the conference! Please go to www.astcnsw.org.au for prices and details. Don't delay as the conference is less than one month away. Places are limited. ************************************************** To post a message to austechwriter, send the message to austechwriter@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx To subscribe to austechwriter, send a message to austechwriter-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with "subscribe" in the Subject field.
