It is depending on wich equipment you have. lets say you have an earphones wich cost 10 dollar. then the bitrate don't have any impact att all. but if you have one for 200 then of corse you hear the diference if it's 128 or 256 kbps. I can hear that and describe it like there is something missing in the lower bitrate. if it higher then the sound is fol. or how to describe it???

128 isn't anywhere near FM quality. I'm not stating that as my opinion.
It is agreed by those who are knowledgeable on this subject and who are
audiofiles or work with audio [professionally. 128kbps is often used when
inferior small speakers are being used for listening or when small wlakman
like headphones are used. When listened to with good reproduction
equipment, 128kbps files do not have a full bodied sound. they sound
smaller than is desirable.

It is debated whether the human ear can hear the difference between
256kbps and CD quality and 320kbps and CD quality. It is also debated
whether the human ear can hear the difference between 256 and 320kbps when
compared with each other. But it is not CD quality. Even 320kbps is not
CD quality. Whether the human ear can hear the difference or not,
technically no mp3 file is CD quality because Mp3 is a compressed format.
I'm talking about stereo files, not files recorded in the monaural format.
In the monaural format, you get roughly the equivalent sound at half the
bit rate when compared with a stereo or joint stereo file. thus, a 64kbps
monaural format file would sound approximately equivalent to a 128kbps
stereo format file. 16kbps may sound alright to you. I don't recall
seeing anyone else ever saying it is acceptable or even sounds ok.

I understood that you intended to send the file by e-mail. I responded by
saying that these days, As I said in my original message, sending files as
attachments that are at all large is anachronistic. People send files
using Drop Box, Sky Drive, or other file sharing methods that are at all
large.

Also, I should add that I saw a message from a list member earlier today
discussing variable bit rate settings. I'm not agreeing or disagreeing
with that message. I haven't looked into variable bit rates. I'm
discussing what I've read about and I've read almost exclusively about
fixed bit rate quality.

the operative term was that i wanted to send by email. actually the 16
bit rate sounds ok. although, i normally would use 32 or 64 bit rate.
128 considered fm quality. 256 cd quality. william

the goal, to allow an audio file to be sent buy e-mail, is years,
perhaps
a decade, behind the times. With Drop Box and other ways of very easily
sharing larger files available, trying to cram a recording into an
e-mail
attachment size limit is really anachronistic. 16kpbs sounds just plain
terrible. I would not go below 32kbps for voice. That's 32kbps
monaural.
I would not go below 128kbps for music, that's 128kbps stereo or joint
stereo.

Hi William
Your settings would make the file size very small, but may be, it will
make
the sound quality very bad. If you record something like podcast, you
should
export it at mp3 variable bitrate usign the folowing step
Ctrl+shift+e open the export dialog
Alt+o option dialog.
From the mp3 export setup choose variable.
From the mp3 export setup quality choose from 4 to 6. The lower number
the
smaller file size. I usually choose 5.
See this link for more info
http://theaudacitytopodcast.com/06
If you have iTunes installed, I recommend you to export your recorded
file
to wave, and use iTunes to convert it to mp3.
See this link to know how to do it:
http://www.spreaker.com/user/dangmanhcuong/create-mp3-file-using-itunes-and-jaws
remember: if your recorded file doesn't require anything related to
stereo,
you should convert it to mono and convert to mp3 using iTunes. The file
size
would be reduce a half.

i record with my mp3 recorder at 128. that is because it works well
for a voice and music mix. but, in this case i recorded a one and
one-half hours webx cast of audio with audacity and wanted to reduced
the file so that it could be sent by email. i chose 16 bps since it
was all voice and voice sound good at that rate. william

Yup, and, remember that generally bitrates are just that - kbps =

It depend. lower rate means taht you get a smaller files but louse in
quality, higher rate means you get a better quality but bigger files.
But

of course you are not able to afterwods improve the quality by set an
higher rates but you can do the oposit.

I never change the rate. Does it make a huge difference if you do?
