VIDEOHOLICA 2014 INTERNATIONAL VIDEO ART FESTIVAL EDITION 7 1 – 7 AUGUST 2014, VARNA, BULGARIA The International Video Art Festival VIDEOHOLICA2014 will be held from1st to 7th of August in Varna. The seventh VIDEOHOLICA plays thematically with the figure 7, presenting those comments on the moving image that are committed to decompose the audio-visual and conceptual matrix of the number 7, which is featuring multiple typical symbolic and meaningful encumbrances. VIDEOHOLICA 2014 opens in a new and attractive for the festival and the audience location on the Varna South Coastal Alley - Primorski Swimming Complex, Varna. Among the rest open-air locations of VIDEOHOLICA 2014 are the State Puppet Theatre - Varna, HORIZONT Summer Club in the Sea Garden of Varna and Menthol Club at the central Varna beach and the Meadow below the Varna Observatory. GRAFFIT Gallery and contemporary space will host again other projections as well as lectures and presentations of the seventh VIDEOHOLICA. 51 video art works by 47 artists will compete for the official awards of VIDEOHOLICA - GOLD, SILVER, BRONZE AND BG VIDEOHOLIC. The jury of VIDEOHOLICA 2014, who will adjudge the prizes, includes: Iara Boubnova (curator, Bulgaria), Sanchirchimeg Vanchinjav (artists, Gold Videoholic of 2013, Mongolia/ Germany), Maria Vassileva (curator, Bulgaria), Antonio Geusa (curator, Italy), Leung Mee-Ping (artist, curator, Hong Kong), Jason Waite (curator, USA). VIDEOHOLICA2014 is a host of Panel Discussion on the topic “Video art in a festival context - quality / quantity, mediation / curation, selection / collection, distribution / archive”. The panel aims to discuss and debate the alternative positioning of the video art in a festival format for strengthening those boundaries of video art mediation and presentation for building up two-side values and benefits, for both artists and audiences, on the example of a festival which is acting in a small and stagnant scene locally but among big international competition. Moderator of the panel is Iara Boubnova (Bulgaria) and participants are Antonio Geusa (Italy), Leung Mee-Ping (Hong Kong), Jason Waite (USA), Markus Huber (Germany). The panel will be held on 4th of August, 2014 at 6 pm in GRAFFIT Gallery. The program of competition of VIDEOHOLICA 2014 is combined in the thematic blocks 1/7, 7/8 БГ, 3/7, FACES 7 and AniMe. Bulgarian videos are collected in the compilation 7/8 БГ that will be screened on August 2nd in the backyard of the Puppet Theatre, Varna, at 9.30 pm. The screening program out of the competition of the seventh VIDEOHOLICA includes: the video art selection “LONG SHORTS”; the project “Metabolizing Labor” by Margarida Mendes (Portugal) and Jason Waite (USA); the documentary By Mina Mileva and Vesela Kazakova “Uncle Tony, Three Fools and the Secret Service” and a selection of films by the American filmmaker Bruce Checefsky. The presentation program of VIDEOHOLICA 2014 includes: the lectures „Political Languages of the Video” by Iara Boubnova (Bulgaria) and „History of Russian Video Art” by Antonio Geusa (Italy) as well as a presentation of the transmediale festival for art and digital culture (Berlin) by the festival manager Markus Huber (Germany). Three artists will present their works in Artist Talk, among them are the Gold Videoholic Sanchirchimeg Vanchinjav (Mongolia/ Germany), Leung Mee-ping (Hong Kong) and Arnaud Brihay (France). Two exhibitions are opening in the frame of VIDEOHOLICA 2014 – the exhibition of young artists “7” at 8 Gallery and an exhibition with installation video art works LoopInc. at contemporary space, Varna.
