Oddly, this is not the case with FastStone MaxView with ICM color managemet turned on.
MaxView seems to be one of those aplications with only half-baked CMM support, that does not use the monitor profile. So, I guess all images with embedded profiles are converted to sRGB (or similar "default" colorspace) and then sent to the monitor uncorrected.
