Team,
The real effect of Hurricane Harvey is clearly visible in daily life of the
population at large....all have piles of debris on the sidewalk,.... all crowd
Home Depot or Lowes, many sport temporary license plates, McDonalds is crowded
all day and the post office is jammed... people are getting used to standing in
line and really talk to each other.....
Mail service has been restored as has once a week garbage collection ....
rumors abound when a big trash truck passes by ... maybe they are coming to our
street.
The scope is measurable in the debris.. little Dickinson has over 1 million
cubic yards, have 8 trucks operating 7 days/week. The debris goes to a
collection point where is is sorted by material; type for each of the
landfills. Every bit of the debris is handled by the trucks at least two and
often three times. Target time for completion of first round is late November
/December. As the rebuild continues they are planning two and possibly three
rounds of cleanup.
I have not been to the church or school this week, spent 10 to 12 hours days
continuing cleanup. The remediation was completed and I had only two areas to
do my own remediation... gloves ...masks....; eye protection. I will finish the
area under the bookshelves by the fireplace, [lacing 500 watt lamps and fans
for dryout in each of the areas. Visiting the next door neighbor I saw how he
managed to keep a working kitchen by building 2x4 trusses under the counter top
as each section of cabinets was removed. I started mine three days ago,
finished today., proceeding carefully because its a pretty heavy piece, about
14 feet long, embedded with sink, plumbing, electrical, etc... you build the
truss and remove each cabinet section .
Then you can remove the drywall and pull the soggy insulation down and start
the dryout./ Black mold is everywhere and has to be treated. Lots of time on
the knees or flat on the back. The kitchen result was pretty good... my
neighbor got Honorable mention for yard of the month..I think I will go for a
survival cabinetry award.of the month.
The kids have been wonderful... virtually all the "treasures of 50 + years were
carefully sorted, some disposed and the remainder cataloged for recovery....if
ever. Homes on our street are about 50 years old...only about 1/3 are original
residents another third recent residents and many homes are rental property.
Two recent buyers are next door and across the street. One a wrecker
driver/family and another a home health nurse. Felt sorry because both have
been in place less than a couple months and were flooded. The water did not
differ between rich and poor, new or old resident, black, white or yellow....it
was not selective in who it impacted.... in that way we were all the same.
The President visited, a fly over, photo ops and then went back to D.C. I don't
think he came to Dickinson, not enough votes. One really great thing is that
once we got into the recovery mode in the house, there was not time for CNN or
Fox. The only news came from the morning papers and was savored leisurely over
a cup of black coffee at the house before work .
I don't know what the final cost will be, or how much will be covered by
insurance. So far have had three hard failures,AC,dishwasher, freezer...
apparently they did not like water.. I think all other appliances are on life
support. The only people who are making out are the metal recycling
facilities... trailers roam the streets picking up washers, refrigerators, any
large metal appliance. They get to the end of the street and are faced with
backing up a long single lane street between the debris..Unfortunately the
drivers are not used to backing up with trailers and they compound the debris
problem by knocking it into the drainage ditches. There have been a few nasty
events and the police have been in the area 2-3 times.
Marta is really coming along, it took a while to reconcile with the new life
and new home when we finish....but she spends a half day helping sort
"treasures" of a lifetime,.I still look at the hardwood flooring in the debris
pile... reminder of a time long ago when we bought our first house with real
hardwood floors.
Each day I find a remarkable event in our community of Dickinson....today we
were visited by a church group from Grand Rapids Michigan with home made peanut
butter and jelly sandwiches. We invited them into the house, they made
sandwiches for the family and for a half hour we we once again witnessed that
many people are good and the strangers that came into our lives left a mark .
I expect to have our day room in operation in the coming week. I have moved
most of my gear out of Jeannies and brought some of Marta's this afternoon.
Home is what you make of it and it will be good to be back home soon.
Cheers, Gene
