Hi Gang,
I think this picture says it all. It is from an editorial by Peggy Noonan in
Sundays Wall Street Journal.
We have bottomed out, most of the demolition is complete. The remediation
continues, the schools are closed. Entire streets are setup for drive by to
pickup food, clothing, water and at the end tables with 15-20 FEMA sitting
taking data and offering help. Problem is there are really no accomodations in
the area, and many have lost cars have families and cannot work. Families have
taken in families and are earning their place in heaven.
When you drive down the littered streets there is a lot of friendly competition
for the "Yard of the Month", my neighbor Rod Kenas got the Honorary Mention on
our street. The Dickinson Mayor, Julie Masters came out to give the award. I
felt cheated because they did the judging before I finished getting my stuff
out. I have been holding most of the stuff with nails in our driveway. We have
people on the street that have not been thru hurricanes and dont know how to
manage debris.
Remediation is continuing in the house, trying to work upstairs is like. Its
like living in a wind tunnel, boiling hot. The units really work. Moisture in
the walls/wood was in the 60-70 range, now it is down to about 40. They will
keep the equipment going until it is in the teens.
USAA was at the house, sent in the data and I am cleared to start the rebuild
process when remediation is complete and house is safe for occupancy. Heck I
have been in the house and still am breathing. My builder said that somehow I
had short circuited the system... it normally takes 4-6 weeks. The secret was
that the lady was former Air Force and I gave her a book.
I feel like an FAO , writing the flight plan and building procedures. The
paperwork once you get it is pretty good..problem is that there are no
procedures that tell you what comes next... I am l lucky that I kept pretty
good records on equipment, tools, furniture, etc. For all the critical events
in the country, emergencies, disasters, etc no one has developed a checklist for
the end to end procvess.
For instance, "When can you start the rebuild? The sequence starts like this,
1- Need to file a claim, sorta tough when there are no communications
2- Wait until the claim gets into a data base
3- Answer innumerable generic emails and calls that have no relevance to the
claim
4- A phone/email or voice of God call comes from FEMA, Windstorm, and
Homeowners insurance sending forms
5- Fill out forms
6- Wait for answer, but again the generic calls/ alerts have to be reviewed to
see if they apply to you... most do not.
7 You get an alert but cannot answer the alert directly, you have to go back to
the data base for the claim.
8- All of the above requires a user ID and /password. Some of which you choose,
others are assigned
9- Finally you get a call, text or email from, FEMA, Windstorm, Homeowners ,
etc giving the name and contact info for your adjustor. They are busy so you
leave messages.
10 - Meanwhile you are keeping notes, taking pictures, messing up passwords.
11- The adjuster arrives, remember there are three of them, sets a schedule,
takes pictures and makes notes and advises they will provide $ to hold you
until the big check arrives.
12- Then you wait, check the claim data base, days go by. You get a new form
detailing the information supporting the pictures... 13 blocks and now they
want receipts for every claim.
Well this is where I am now, I have completed the steps up to 12 and only have
only the windstorm guy to meet Saturday.
At the end you can start the "build back"when paperwork completed and the
adjuster declares the facility safe to enter, If someone would just publish a
procedure it would sure as heck help,
Will send the picture of Rod's Yard of the Month
Cheers, Gene
