The news is not good. Carol went into the hospital this past week with an obstruction of the intestine. They planned on surgery this weekend; however, xrays showed that the cancer was growing at a very aggressive rate and within the lymph nodes and small intestine.
The cancer is now inoperable and incurable. After much consideration Carol has decided that she will go home in the next few days with hospice care. She and her family have discussed all options and this is the choice they have made due to quality of life issues. The doctor feels she can live for 1 to 6 weeks. When talking with visitors and callers she would rather not concentrate on the medical side and would appreciate not having to answer a lot of these questions. For status updates, please feel free to call/email me or Dolly Lambdin.
Currently she is not in much pain, although she does get nauseous. She tires easily but is in fairly good spirits. She has, and will continue to have, pain medication available to her.
What you can do for her: They are not going to need any food at this time. I'll let you all know if/when Hall and Allen would like help with meals.
To avoid being bombarded with calls we have developed a little system we hope you find easy and yet gives you some access to her:
If your last name begins with A through M, please call between 10 a.m. and noon. If your last name begins with N through Z, please call between 2 and 4 p.m. This times may change as resting/hospice patterns set in.
If you get her answering machine, please leave your name and time you called at the very beginning of the message, and then leave any message you have. She will get back to you as she can. In your phone message/email let her know if and when you want to visit and she will try to let you know if that will work for her. You can email at any time, of course. Please do not plan on visiting without talking to her first.
I will try to keep you all updated when there are changes but please bear with me, if you have questions or want updates and I haven't sent one, feel free to email this address or call (929-9505 or 413-2281-cell).
From a song Carol helped to write: When one of us is hurting, we all do are part. We help one another, it comes from our heart. We all come together in community, yeah, We all come together in community.
This is a hard time for Carol's family and friends (you!) so be gentle with yourself and know Carol's strength is going to get her through and our love for her will help us all!
