Friends, I am planning on attending. Hope to see some others there. Ray ************* Saturday, March 4th, 9:00 AM until 4:30 PM on in McCord #204 (and some âbreak-out sessionâ rooms) at the Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, 100 East 27th Street, Austin, Texas. On Saturday, March 4, 2006, the Austin Chapter of the Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty (TCADP) and the Friends Meeting of Austin are co-sponsoring a one-day workshop at the Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary designed to encourage effective advocacy against the death penalty by Austin religious fellowships. (See the attached tentative, advance agenda for the day.) The workshop --- Austin Religious Response To The Death Penalty: Community Reconciliation and Healing Without Resorting to Violence --- will explore the need for Austin congregations to bear witness to the real impact of the death penalty on people who are the (direct and indirect) objects of its violence. Theoretical arguments aside, what does the death penalty do to us? The workshop has two main components: ***** Testimonies will be received from the surviving relatives of victims of capital offenses and from the family members of death row inmates. ***** Participants will be encouraged to brainstorm in an organized way about how they and their congregations might coalesce in actions that enhance our communityâs understanding of capital punishment and its effects. Models for action shall be proposed, such as the following: ***** Joining the Friends Meeting of Austin in principled letter writing to the Board of Pardons and Paroles advocating commutation for every death sentenced inmate who is assigned an execution date. ***** Having congregations adopt under their special care the surviving relatives of victims of capital offenses and/or the family members of inmates condemned to die. It is greatly desired that the models proposed also will present a springboard for new ideas that emerge from the dayâs discussions. Please come and participate. Please invite like-minded friends who also find that their faith leads them to seek the abolition of the death penalty. The workshop is free of charge and lunch will be provided. It will take place from 9:00 AM until 4:30 PM on March 4th in McCord #204 (and some âbreak-out sessionâ rooms) at the Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, 100 East 27th Street, Austin, Texas. Please RSVP to Bob Van Steenburg, phone: 258-6480; e-mail: bobvans@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx If you have any questions about the workshop, please donât hesitate to contact Bob (by the aforementioned means) or Walter Long (554-2269;:waltlong@xxxxxxx).
